Lesson from “Family Home Evening Adventures”

Opening Prayer: By Invitation

Objective:   Help family members understand that Heavenly Father wants His children to be free to exercise their agency and that the American continent was set aside as the promised land offering freedom and liberty to those blessed to live there.

Directions:   Enlarge the flag banner page by 250 percent onto poster size paper (or make a similar flag on poster board using markers or pieced construction paper). Color the top (solid half) blue and the bottom stripes red and white. Copy the scripture stars onto white card-stock paper, and cut them out. Laminate the flag banner and the scripture stars for durability if desired.  Click here to print Scripture Stars & Flag Pattern.

Captain Moroni

Visual Aid: Captain Moroni Raises the Title of Liberty – Gospel Art Book #79

Lesson: Teach family members that Heavenly Father places great value on the need for freedom and liberty; agency is an essential part of the plan of salvation. Heavenly Father made sure the Restoration of the gospel took place in a free land. Read about these points in the scriptures by taking turns reading a scripture star. Discuss the importance of each scripture in understanding personal or national free- dom. Have family members place the scripture stars on the flag banner. Display the flag banner in your home throughout the month as a visual reminder of the importance of freedom and liberty.

U.S. Constitution

Activity: Take time during family home evening to read parts of the Constitution and list some of the freedoms it specifically designates for citizens of the United States. Learn about the founding fathers and how they worked to ensure the birth of the nation was based firmly in freedom and liberty.

36 Servings Prep: 30 min. + freezing Bake: 15 min. + cooling

Ingredients

    1 package (18-1/4 ounces) red velvet cake mix
    1 quart blue moon ice cream, softened
    3 cups heavy whipping cream
    1-1/2 cups marshmallow creme
    Red, white and blue sprinkles
    Blue colored sugar

Directions

·      Prepare cake mix batter according to package directions for cupcakes.

·      Fill paper-lined muffin cups half full. Bake at 350° for 11-14 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.

·      Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks to cool completely.

·      Working quickly, spread ice cream over cupcakes.

·      Freeze for at least 1 hour.

·      In a large bowl, combine cream and marshmallow creme; beat until stiff peaks form.

·      Pipe over cupcakes; decorate with sprinkles and colored sugar.

·      Freeze for 4 hours or until firm.

Yield: 3 dozen.

I have a wonderful wacky friend who continues to amaze me with her talent and spiritual strength. Suzy and I met while serving in the Orlando Florida Temple together. I learned firsthand how her spunky personality and love for life not only influences her work, but also influences those around her. I will be forever grateful for her friendship and for her sweet testimony of what it truly means to be a mother.

Creating My Own Kind of Motherhood

Those of you who know my story of the wacky, round-about way I became a mother know that I am far from being a traditional mom. Always wanting a large family, but unable to biologically conceive, chasing that dream was not easy. But from a young age, I was determined to make it happen. By my 29th birthday, I was a single mom with one adopted child -- a slow but good start.  That year, I kicked it into high gear.  I married a widower I'd only know 30 days, added 4 full time step children to the mix.  And because life wasn't crazy enough, I took on the challenge of a Native American foster child. Do the math.  It adds up to six kids, all calling me mom and singing Happy Birthday to me by my 30th birthday.  

Since I figured this was my one and only shot to do "the Mom Gig," I quit my job and decided to be a full time, stay at home mom.  It was the most difficult thing I've ever done. Between the sheer amount of work it took to keep a family that size going, the challenges of budgeting on a single income, not to mention the nonstop drama of it all, it was not easy. There were moments I doubted my sanity.  I can honestly say I have never worked so hard or cried so much. It's not something I recommend to the faint of heart. And I made a lot of mistakes -- all mothers do. But I did a lot of things right, too. Today, 25 years later, I'm still happily wed and have an amazing family.  All the kids are grown, educated and married. I have 12 grandchildren and I'm hoping for a few more with our youngest son just recently married. I've started a new career and I am still following my heart and my dreams by sharing my art, writing and wacky philosophy with anyone who will listen.

For me, it was the right choice. 

The art of motherhood is not about carrying a child in your womb for 9 months and physically giving birth to a biological offspring. Its about choosing to raise, rear, nurture and care for the future generation. It is about leaving the world a bit better because you decided to spend your life teaching someone else how to live. For me, it has made all the difference.

All women are not mothers, but we've all had someone in our lives who at one point or another fulfilled at least a portion of that nurturing roll in our life. Whether she is biologically related to you or not, take a moment this Mother's Day to thank that special woman who took the time to mother you.

A clean YA novel that was fun to read. There's enough magic and high school drama to keep things entertaining to the very end.

Inspirational

My Rating: (4/5 Stars)

It was an emotional journey reading this book. Coming from a loving home, it was hard to imagine what her life was like. I think what was so appealing to me was that throughout the whole story, even when Ayse was retelling the dark parts of her life, there was always a peaceful/happy undercurrent to her narrative. She is now telling the story as a Latter Day Saint, so amidst the dark parts of her story she would say something like,
 " because of the gospel of Jesus Christ, I have come to forgive and be at peace with that part of my life."

It's a story of hardships and trials, but also one of forgiveness and love.

Romance

My Rating: (4.5/5 Stars)


This is one of those stories that I wish would be made into a Hallmark movie. I will definitely be adding this one to my personal collection. I love reading a CLEAN wholesome love story! I loved the characters, I loved the humor, and I loved the plot. The only problem with reading a good book like this, is that it sets the standard pretty high for the next book you read :)
